Greetings,
I hope this letter finds everyone at JLI well. I am writing
to request to join the penpal program, among other things.
Regarding the new advent of the tablets, it has been a farce; so
much rehabilitative purposes could be concepted out of this, but institutions
rather exploit this for monetary benefits. Nobody sees this as an opportu-
nity to grant education and knowledge to a vast population. But it's
more than that: it can effectively supplant staffing (or remedy
understaffing) in the medical field - especially mental health - by
providing selfhelp information, scheduled tele-appointments with treatment
providers (be it paid by the inmate or an organization established via
partnership), and so much more. For example, organizations that
provide evidence-based recidivism reduction programs (EBRRs), such
as Prisoner Express, Human Kindness Foundation, Prison Mathematics
Project, and so many more could be benefiting from partnerships with
institutions. The worst part is that, by law, the FBOP must pursue
these venues, be it by accepting volunteer services or by making
detailed partnerships (First Step Act of 2018's amendment to title
18 U.S.C. § 3621(h)). During my research, not once, or not genuinely,
have facilities done this. Unless these organizations, as well as society
as a whole and each individual, writes to the Director of the FBOP
and to the Attorney General expressing concern and desire to volunteer
help directly , nothing will change.
